7 Ways to Treat Sensitive Teeth at Home

While many people simply chalk this uncomfortable sensation up to bad luck or bad genetics, there’s a good chance that something in your everyday life is triggering it. Thankfully, there are just as many ways you can easily treat your tooth sensitivity from home! Read on to learn seven of the best ways to keep your smile strong and healthy.

1.) Brush Carefully

If you brush your teeth with too much force or a hard-bristled toothbrush, you may be doing more harm than good. These factors can scratch away your enamel and cause your gums to recede, exposing the sensitive layers underneath. Always brush gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush.

2.) Use a Desensitizing Toothpaste

Another way to improve your daily dental routine in order to treat sensitive teeth is to use desensitizing toothpaste. This over-the-counter product helps block transmission of sensation from the tooth to the nerve to ease sensitivity.

3.) Rinse with a Fluoridated Mouthwash

Fluoride can help rebuild your enamel and treat sensitivity. While your toothpaste and tap water contain fluoride, you can support your sensitive teeth even more by rinsing with a store-bought fluoridated mouthwash. These oral rinses will help treat tooth sensitivity as well as factors that can contribute to it, like tooth decay.

4.) Avoid Acidic Drinks

Drinking too many acidic beverages burns away your enamel and reveals the sensitive parts of the tooth underneath. Limit or avoid beverages like soda, sports drinks, energy drinks, and fruit juice to protect your teeth. If you do choose to indulge, wait at least 30 minutes afterwards before brushing your teeth.

5.) Stop Using Whitening Products

Teeth whitening products contain a bleaching agent to break up discoloration in your teeth. However, overuse can significantly weaken your enamel and cause tooth sensitivity. Cut back on how often you use whitening products and let your dentist know that you have sensitive teeth before getting an in-office teeth whitening treatment.

6.) Bite Down on a Mouth Guard

Another factor that can cause your teeth to feel sensitive is a condition called bruxism. This issue causes you to grind your teeth in your sleep, which wears down your enamel and can even lead to chipped or cracked teeth.
