You are making a great decision for your confidence and oral health by choosing braces to align your teeth. While you undergo your treatment, it is vital for you to remain proactive when caring for your braces. Although your oral hygiene routine may become a little more complicated, it is best to take the time to properly brush and floss your teeth every day.

Keep Your Smile Healthy

Good dental hygiene is crucial while wearing braces; however, it can be a little difficult to clean around the brackets and wires. Although it may be a little harder, you want to take the time to brush and floss or you may develop gum disease and tooth decay. Not to mention, your beautiful new smile can be tarnished by tooth discoloration if you did not clean your teeth well while your braces are in place.

To effectively remove trapped food particles and bacteria, there are several tips you should follow to make your oral hygiene routine more effective.

  1. Brush Twice a Day: It is easy for food to become trapped between the wires and your teeth. This can create pockets of decay if you do not brush your teeth twice a day. Take the time to clean your teeth well twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste for at least two minutes each session.
  2. Rinse Your Mouth: In between brushing, rinse your mouth with water three to four times per day. This will help to loosen food that may be caught in the braces. Before going to bed, use a fluoride mouth rinse after brushing your teeth.
  3. Floss Daily: Every night before going to bed, take the time to floss in between each tooth and around the brackets. This can be difficult. Some find it easier to use a water flosser or flossers that are specially designed for those who have braces.
  4. Maintain Your Dental Cleanings: In addition to visiting your orthodontist in Arlington, do not forget to visit your general dentist for a cleaning and checkup every six months. They will help to clean around your braces and your teeth to remove any buildup that may have been missed at home. In addition, they can help to detect any weakened areas of enamel that may have developed to prevent the issue from worsening.

Invest in Your Smile

Do not let oral health issues like tooth decay put a damper on your new smile. Take a proactive approach to keep your teeth and gums healthy while on your journey to improved oral health and confidence.
